The space race was still going on between the U.S. and the Soviet Union even as Apollo 11 astronauts were on the lunar surface. On July 16, 1969, the trio lifted into space aboard the Apollo 11 and then entered a lunar orbit. By the next day, Armstrong and Aldrin, aboard the lunar module Eagle, had separated from Collins who remained in the command module.
